Top 10 Tips for Getting the Best Pre-Wedding Photos
1. Lighting is everything
Pick a room with big windows and lots of natural light if you can. Soft light makes everyone look amazing, so I’ll try to position you near those windows for that perfect soft, flattering look all my brides love. I’ll guide you to the best spots for lighting and angles. It might mean moving closer to a window or adjusting slightly, but these little changes will make a big difference in your photos.
2. Keep it tidy
Try to keep the space as clean as possible this helps me capture intimate, beautiful moments without distractions like bags, hangers, or clutter in the background.
3. Have your details ready to go
I love snapping shots of the little things, like your dress, shoes, jewellery, and bouquet. These details tell your story and set the vibe for the day. Lay them out before I arrive so I can jump right in.
4. Coordinated outfits for the win
Matching robes or cute PJs look amazing in the getting-ready shots. They add a fun, polished look to the group photos and tie everything together.
5. Stay relaxed and enjoy the moment
The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be. Don’t stress about posing just enjoy the morning, and I’ll capture those genuine, candid moments.
6. Keep the room intimate
Fewer people in the room mean fewer distractions. Try to limit the bridal prep to close family and bridesmaids so I can capture those personal, meaningful moments.
7. Dry the bouquet early
Having your bouquet with you during prep adds a personal touch to your photos. I usually suggest taking the flowers out of the water about an hour before so they’re dry and ready for you to hold without any risk of water dripping on your dress.
8. Get into your dress early
Plan to get into your dress about an hour before the ceremony. It may seem early, but it gives you plenty of time for final photos and a celebratory glass of bubbly! Make sure whoever is helping you into your dress is ready ahead of time, especially if your dress has tricky buttons they can take a little longer than expected.
9. Set the mood with music
Play your favourite tunes while getting ready to keep things fun and relaxed, a portable speaker works great for this. The more comfortable you feel, the more natural and genuine your photos will be and most importantly, have fun! The best shots come from real laughter, smiles, and those authentic moments.
10. First look
One of my favourite moments to capture is the first look. This is often the bride’s dad or brother but can also be bridesmaids or even your children and can lead to some truly beautiful and emotional photos too. These moments are always full of genuine reactions and are a lovely way to add even more magic to your wedding album.

“David was fantastic. He understood our brief with regards to what we did and didn’t want. On the day, he was great with us and the rest of the party in subtly organising and directing us for the best photos, going the extra mile too.
The final photos were beyond expectations and look superb. Everyone has commented since on the quality of the photography and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend David to anyone looking for a personable, professional and experienced photographer.
Thank you David ! ”
